Ryerson University honours Roger Moore with a honorary degree.

Roger Moore at the Ryerson UniveristyFor the launch of a partnership between the Consultative Group on Early Childhood Care and Development and Ryerson's School of Early Childhood Education, actor Roger Moore visited the University on October 29, 1999 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mr. Moore attended the launch in his capacity as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, which is a major supporter of the Consultative Group. The Group is an international inter-agency body dedicated to improving the condition of young children at risk. While at Ryerson, Mr. Moore also received an honorary doctorate of law.

Mr. Moore is being honoured for his work promoting children's rights and for his outstanding career in the entertainment field.

"Ryerson is proud to honour Roger Moore for his service on behalf of the world's children. He has helped put the spotlight on issues of children's rights and has demonstrated a commitment to the betterment of young people around the world," said Dr. Claude Lajeunesse, Ryerson President.

Following bestowal of the honorary doctorate, Mr. Moore addressed convocation.

Roger Moore at the Ryerson UniveristyIn his role as UNICEF Special Representative for the Film Arts, and subsequently UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Mr. Moore has visited Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Brazil, the Philippines, Mexico, and most recently Slovenia and Macedonia to see UNICEF projects in action and to advocate for children's rights.

He has been particularly supportive of the Canadian UNICEF Committee. Over the past five years he has travelled across the country, meeting with mayors, business leaders, countless volunteers, and Prime Minister Jean Chretien, all to help raise funds for UNICEF and awareness of children's rights.

Roger Moore speaking at the Ryerson University Mr. Moore is also a strong supporter of Variety Clubs International and is the Honorary Chairperson of the UNICEF/Kiwanis Campaign to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders by the year 2000.

In December of 1998 he was honoured by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth with the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) Award, in recognition of his many humanitarian achievements
