Alias - The Prophecy (2002)
Sir Roger Moore's appearance in "Alias", ABC's popular action series which ran for five seasons (2001-2006), grew out of hosting ABC's "Bond Picture Show". According to Moore's autobiography, he was approached by the producers of the series while working at Ardmore in 2001. J.J. Abrams, series creator and executive producer: "[With] Roger Moore, ABC actually asked me. If I would be interested and I just laughed. I was like, 'Are you kidding me? That would be my dream, I just would love it.' So we were lucky to get him. When I went to see my first James Bond movies, for me, that was just who James Bond was." After a couple of meetings during which the script and the character Moore was to play was discussed, the actor went to Los Angeles in February 2002 to film the episode called "The Prophecy", which was broadcast on March 10.
Moore played Edward Poole, the head of SD-9, the British equivalent of SD-6, the rogue spy agency where Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) works. In "The Prophecy" Sydney is tested by the Department of Special Research to discover her mysterious link to a chilling 500-year-old picture and prophecy foretold in the Rambaldi manuscript. A drawing of a woman who bears an eerie resemblance to her appears in a blank page of the manuscript thanks to the revealing substance in the vial that McKenas Cole had tried to steal from SD-6. Meanwhile, after uncovering the identity of the rogue group leader, "The Man," Sloane (Ron Rifkin) learns through fellow Alliance of Twelve member Edward Poole that a close friend may be working with the enemy.
Initially Edward Poole was to become a recurring character in the series. Unfortunately, due to contractual reasons, the idea was abandoned. Moore's opinion of the series was that it was "terrific". "The girl is wonderful, Jennifer Garner," the actor said. "I love the style of the show. I think it's a very cleverly made show; it's very well conceived and very well written. I would hate, as Bond, ever to have come across somebody like Jennifer Garner. She's far too pretty, she's far too young and she's far too talented and athletic," he added. Abrams was also convinced that Moore's celluloid spy connection would bring "an added level of enjoyment". "Well, they didn't kill me at the end," Moore said at the time, adding that he would be delighted to return. However, it was not to happen.
