Bonds in numbers: "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974)
"The Man with the Golden Gun" turned out to be more important that it was originally thought. After a stunning succes of "Live and Let Die", the producers had to to prove they are able to make at least as a good Bond picture as its predecessor. They decided to make the series more fictional and thus probably more up-to-date. The Cold War was in a new phase now and the war in Vietnam was over. The audiences needed more fantasy. And so, the film turned out to be the turning point, showing a new quality of the Bond pictures, in which their escapistic character was to be driven into its limits. "The Man with the Golden Gun" was also the last Bond picture to be produced by Broccoli and Saltzman. The latter decided to end a twelve-year partnership, leaving 007 entirely in the hands of Cubby Broccoli.
